Why Support the Chickaroo Classic on July 14, 2008?
On April 26, 2007 our lives and world forever changed when we learned our 6 year old daughter Caroline (Chickaroo) had a plum sized tumor lodged deep inside her brain. Her tumor, a low grade astrocytoma (LGA), is inoperable and incurable. Presently, the best course of treatment for her chronic condition is toxic chemotherapy; we hope and pray this will inhibit tumor growth with minimal side effects.
Brain tumors are the number one cause of cancer death in children and the number two overall cause of childhood death after accidents. While significant strides have been made in many forms of childhood cancer, pediatric brain tumors have all but been neglected. The treatment options for LGA’s have not changed for over 25 years, typically a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Whether stand alone or in combination, all of these options would have significant impact on anyone let alone a child with a developing brain.
A small group of parents with children afflicted with low-grade tumors launched the Pediatric Low-Grade Astrocytoma Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute on May 7, 2007 (less than 2 weeks after Caroline’s diagnosis!) The new concentration of research on pediatric low-grade brain tumors at Dana-Farber is believed to be the first coordinated research effort committed to this specific type of tumor. Scientists from a range of specialties will focus on clinical and basic aspects of the problem, with a five-year goal of identifying a molecular target in LGA’s that can be hit with a designer drug.
Funding this program has come down to the efforts of families and friends of LGA patients. We are not willing to stand by and let others do all the work to help our daughter. Please help us keep this program going strong! We ultimately need to find a cure for Caroline, and in the meantime, kinder and more effective treatment. We need you to join Team Chickaroo as we vigorously pursue this cause! We remain ever so appreciative of your concern, support, and generosity, and gratefully THANK YOU!
